The Antarctic Photography

October sees the opening of a new exhibition at Buckingham Palace, marking the 100th anniversary of Captain Scott’s ill-fated journey to the South Pole.

The exhibition features the remarkable photographs taken in Antarctica by Herbert George Ponting to record Scott’s Terra Nova expedition of 1910-13, a journey from which he and four members of his team never returned.

Also on display are photographs by Frank Hurley, who accompanied Ernest Shackleton on his polar expedition between 1914–16, which included a heroic sea journey from Elephant Island to South Georgia.

The Heart of the Great Alone: Scott, Shackleton and Antarctic Photography is on display at the Queen's Gallery, Buckingham Palace, from 21 October–15 April 2012. You can find out more about the photographs and the exhibition at the  Royal Collection website.
